Perspective is Everything. What Do You See? | Allan Kehler

What do you see when you look at this image?

When I show this to an audience, many reply with the same automatic response: A black dot. I then attempt to make a joke and say something like, “If you see a clown’s face we need to talk.”

But why is it that the majority of individuals focus their attention on the black dot opposed to all of the white surrounding it?

Think about the media for a moment. The media tends to focus primarily on this black dot, and reports the world through a dark lens. Stories are discussed that typically focus on all of the problems in our society opposed to all of the good that takes place. Sadly, I am not sure that people would read a newspaper, watch the news, or listen to a radio if it only reported the good in this world.

Life is all about perspective.

Let me provide an example. After a decent snow fall my friend was complaining that he now had to shovel his driveway. I countered his statement by reminding him that at least he had a driveway to shovel. I guarantee that many people who are living on the streets would do anything to shovel a driveway if it meant they had their own home to rest.

I am sure that at this very moment you have your share of challenges, and it can seem like many things are going wrong in your life. However, I can also guarantee that there are many things going right. It is ultimately up to you to decide where you want your eyes to rest.

There will always be a reason to be negative,
but there will also always a reason to be positive.

I would encourage you to open your eyes wide, and see all of the good around you. This will allow your perspective on life to shift accordingly.

Take a glance at the image once again.

Now what do you see?

“What’s stronger than a broken man who has the courage to rebuild himself? It’s time to redefine what it means to be strong.”
