Mental Health and Connection | Allan Kehler

With a six-hour layover in Halifax, I walked into Customs this morning hoping that they could squeeze me in for my Nexus interview.

I approached the counter stating my intention, and a man asked me what I did for work.

After telling him that I was a speaker on topics related to mental health he said, “So, you’ve had some challenges, have you?”

“A few.” I replied with a smile.

His tone changed, and then he said the two most powerful words that exist. “Me too.”

And just like that, the foundation was laid.

Now, what are the odds that not a single other person would be in this secured and controlled area? Something bigger than us had created a safe space for two men to have a very real and meaningful conversation.

Through a sheet of plexiglass, I listened as he shared that eight years ago, he almost didn’t make it. Wanting to be a better husband and father, he fought for his freedom.

Our conversation ended with a handshake through that tiny opening at the bottom of the glass.

This morning, I walked away with much more than my Nexus card.

Keep talking my friends.

“What’s stronger than a broken man who has the courage to rebuild himself? It’s time to redefine what it means to be strong.”
